Time to Get Sirius
Well, the Radio Shack Marketing Dept. should be proud--I caught the tail-end of a commercial on Saturday, talking about a special Thanksgiving weekend deal involving sale price, rebate, free accessory, etc. if one bought a Sirius radio system. Actually, the seed of interest was planted this year at the Mid-South Fair when I started information-gathering about this service. Sometimes you just get so tired of hearing radio DJ's do stupid improv comments up until the last .0382 second prior to the first lyric of the song.
So, I had questions (and a checkbook), and they had answers. The deal was that I got $200 worth of Sirius "Orbiter" equipment for $130, and I get to mail off for another $30 rebate. Installation and activation still to follow, but I'm very much looking forward to our next road trip, when we get to listen to the same station the entire time. Nothing like "Old Skool Rap" (channel 43) for 6 uninterrupted hours.
And for those of you who think this was driven by the ability to tune into shock jock Howard Stern, or NHL hockey, or Hot Jamz (channel 50), I am reminded of the immortal words of Tweety Bird--"He don't know me vewwy well, do he?"

We have a deal at work with Sirius to get all their equipment for $50. I almost pulled the trigger a couple of weeks ago, but now I'm torn because as nice as it would be to start off cheaper, I compared Sirius with XM and I can't decide. XM is a few bucks cheaper per month. Sirius has NFL radio. XM has Major League Baseball. Sirius has no ads ever. XM has a few on certain stations. The MLB seems to be winning, so I can listen to the Red Sox anywhere.
Well, at risk of trying to woo you over to my satellite radio provider (which isn't true--I couldn't care less), there are some other things to consider beyond the XM vs Sirius, $9.95 vs $12.95 debate. For example, XM charges extra for online listening, while Sirius throws it in for free. There are a couple of other "a la carte" add-ons that XM offers whose Sirius' comparables are free (talk stations or networks, perhaps?). Sirius offers "Maxim Radio" for free, while XM's Playboy channel is a premium charge. XM is a partner with General Motors, Sirius is a partner with Ford, Dodge/Chrysler, BMW, Nissan, Volvo, Mercedes, et. al. And so on and so on. I didn't pay THAT much attention to the chart at Radio Shack......but it's pretty much 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Just go make an informed decision and fire all those local DJ's!!!
